Namaste.
I’ve traveled to more than 40 countries, and India was not a destination I expected to completely wow me. But this stay did. Six Senses Fort Barwara was one of those rare places that genuinely exceeded what I thought a hotel experience could be.

We spent 12 days there in December, which is much longer than most people stay at a luxury resort. But Fort Barwara never felt like somewhere we were simply sleeping between sightseeing days. The fort itself, the food, the spa, the sustainability programs, and the small experiences woven into each day became part of the trip.
Set inside a restored 700-year-old fort in Rajasthan, the property incorporates two palaces and two temples within the fort walls. Six Senses says the restoration took more than a decade and was designed around preserving the original architecture and local heritage.
The Fort Is the Experience
Staying at Six Senses Fort Barwara feels completely different from staying at a typical luxury hotel because the property itself is part of the experience.
The resort is built within a restored historic fort, with courtyards, stone walls, temples, terraces, and views that make you want to wander even when you have nowhere to be.
We had plenty of time to explore because we stayed for 12 days, and I think that slower pace is part of why the property stayed with us so strongly.
Our Room Felt Completely MAGICAL
Because Fort Barwara is built inside a historic fort, the rooms don’t feel cookie-cutter. Ours had so much character — layered levels, beautiful materials, and details that made it feel like we were staying somewhere genuinely special rather than in a standard luxury hotel.
To this day, my daughter still asks for a “window bed” like the one at Fort Barwara. In addition to the wooden crib, the staff had set up a little rug and teepee tent on the floor for our baby. It was such a thoughtful touch and gave him his own cozy little space. The bathroom oozed luxury and made us feel like actors in a movie. I still can’t get over the smart toilet with its heated seat, night light, and automatic flush.
The Food Never Got Boring — Even After 12 Days
One thing I wondered before a 12-day stay was whether we’d get tired of eating at the same resort with only two restaurants. We didn’t. And we are very much meat eaters, so I was especially curious how we’d feel about the food in India, where beef is generally not part of the menu.
It was never an issue. The food stayed consistently excellent, with plenty of variety, and meals still felt special instead of repetitive. We ate incredibly well the entire stay.
Some of my favorite memories are tied to the more interactive food experiences. Our kids loved making sourdough pizza every night in the outdoor wood fired oven, and it became one of those little rituals they looked forward to again and again.
The food also felt connected to the place. Local flavors, thoughtful presentation, and ingredients from the gardens made it feel very different from the kind of luxury hotel menu that could have been served anywhere.
Ayurveda Shaped More Than Just the Spa
Fort Barwara was our first real introduction to Ayurveda in a way that felt fully integrated into the stay. Before we even arrived, we had an initial consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor by video, followed by an in-person consultation once we were at the resort.
What surprised me most was how much that consultation carried into the rest of the experience. The recommendations weren’t limited to spa treatments — they influenced what the chef suggested we eat, too. It made the resort’s focus on health and wellbeing feel genuinely personal rather than like a generic wellness add-on.
It allowed us to slow down and pay attention to how food, rest, movement, and treatment were all being considered together. To this day, it was one of the most unique parts of the stay.
We Built Wellness Into Every Day
Because Fort Barwara is such a wellness-focused resort, we booked a couples wellness package as part of our stay and accommodation costs. That meant wellness was built into the trip from the beginning rather than something we added on once we arrived.
We tried different styles of massage, head treatments, sound bowls, meditation, and yoga. The variety made it feel more like exploring different approaches to wellness than simply booking the same spa treatment over and over. To say I felt pampered — especially as a postpartum mom — would be an understatement. This was the perfect place to recover, reset, and feel cared for after bringing a new life into the world.
One practical tip: if wellness is a big reason you’re coming, book your treatments early. Some of the spa experiences can fill up well in advance.
Our daughter got into it too. Her favorite was the aerial-style yoga using a hammock, which made the wellness side of the resort family-friendly instead of something just for adults.
The People Made the Stay Feel Personal
One of the things I remember most about Fort Barwara is the staff. After 12 days, they almost started to feel like family. Our kids cried when it was time to say goodbye to the team at the kids’ club.
The waiters and waitresses also shared pieces of their own stories with us — how they came to work there, what their journeys had looked like, and what the job meant to them. Those conversations made the stay feel much more personal than polished service alone ever could.
And the service really was impeccable. Whether we were walking through the majestic hallways, watching the sunset over the fort, or simply heading to dinner, everything felt thoughtful without feeling stiff or overly formal.
Christmas at the Fort Made It Even More Memorable
We visited right before Christmas, which added another layer to the experience. The resort created little holiday moments throughout the stay without making the property feel overly commercial or themed.
The kids decorated gingerbread houses and Christmas cookies, and every evening there were local musicians playing for us. Those small touches made Christmas feel special even though we were far from home.
Some of my favorite moments were the quieter ones — sitting near the fire while local aunties served warm masala chai and made bread by hand. It was cozy, personal, and completely different from any Christmas we had experienced before. The cool mornings and evenings added to the ambience.
The Earth Lab Was Fun for Kids and Adults
This Six Senses property has an “Earth Lab,” which ended up being such a unique experience for both the adults and the kids. We made natural toothpaste powder and homemade lip balm, learned about different natural ingredients, and got a much more hands-on look at how Six Senses approaches sustainability and wellbeing.
It was educational without feeling like a lesson, and the kids genuinely enjoyed it. For me, it was one of the clearest examples of how the resort made its sustainability philosophy part of the guest experience rather than something happening quietly in the background.
The Icing on the Cake: We Took Part in a Local School Ceremony
Because we stayed at Fort Barwara for so long, we happened to have one experience we never could have planned. We met a senior Six Senses executive who was involved in providing a nearby school with a water filtration system, and he invited us to join the ceremony.
It was surreal. We had come for a luxury hotel stay and suddenly found ourselves at a local school, witnessing a community project firsthand. It gave us a completely different perspective on the connection between the resort and the surrounding area.
That unexpected experience became one of the most meaningful memories of the entire trip.
Our 8-year-old son even got to cut the ceremonial ribbon.
Is Six Senses Fort Barwara Worth It?
For us, absolutely. But not just because it was luxurious.
What made Fort Barwara so special was how many different layers there were to the stay — the history of the fort, the food, the wellness, the people, the sustainability experiences, the local community, and all of the small moments in between.
We stayed for 12 days, which is much longer than most travelers will, but I’m glad we did. It gave us time to slow down and actually experience the property rather than rush through it.
Even after traveling to more than 40 countries, this is still one of the places we talk about most.
Tips for Visiting Six Senses Fort Barwara
We stayed 12 days, which is much longer than most travelers will need. For most people, I think 3–4 nights would be enough to enjoy the fort, book a few wellness experiences, relax, and take part in some of the activities without feeling rushed.
If wellness is a big reason for your stay, book your spa treatments and consultations as early as possible. Some experiences can fill up well in advance.
Fort Barwara is also a great base if you want to pair your stay with a Ranthambore tiger safari. That gives you a very different experience from the resort itself and is one of the reasons this part of Rajasthan can work so well as a longer stop.
I think Fort Barwara is especially well suited for couples, families who appreciate meaningful experiences, and travelers who want more than a beautiful room. It’s a great fit if you value wellness, food, culture, sustainability, and a slower pace.
