Ninh Binh was supposed to be a quieter stop on our Vietnam itinerary. Instead, it became one of the places we still talk about most.
We stayed four days rather than taking the popular day trip from Hanoi, which gave us time to bike, hike, cook, learn a traditional craft, and actually experience the countryside.
If you’re wondering how many days to spend in Ninh Binh, I’m firmly on team stay awhile.

Bike Through Thung Nham
Our hotel, Tam Coc Garden, had bikes for our family. We rode through the countryside toward Thung Nham Park, where we found flower gardens, ponds, caves, and dramatic limestone mountains. This was such a hidden gem!
The ride itself ended up being part of the experience. It felt less like checking off an attraction and more like actually exploring Ninh Binh at our own pace.
And this wasn’t a long or difficult bike ride. I was pregnant, and we had a 6- and 8-year-old with us, so it was really just a leisurely ride to the end of the road and then through the park.
Learn Basket Weaving — and Bring Home the Story
We did a traditional basket-weaving lesson with an elderly local craftsman, sitting on the floor around him and trying to follow along. It was much harder than it looked.
His English was limited, so every time one of us got the weave wrong, his feedback was basically: “No, no, no, no.” It became an instant family joke that we still say years later.
The best part? We brought the baskets home, and they’re still displayed in our house.
Catch Shrimp — Then Cook Dinner
We went out in two small rowboats with a local husband-and-wife team to check their shrimp traps, then visited their humble home before heading back to the resort to cook what we had caught.
We made green mango salad, shrimp-and-sweet-potato pancakes, and braised prawns. It felt personal and local in a way that sightseeing alone never could. And somehow, my kids actually tried everything!

Leave Time for Hiking and Caves
Ninh Binh has so much more than the famous boat rides. We hiked, explored caves, and had time to wander without feeling like we were rushing from one attraction to the next.
That slower pace is a big reason I’m glad we stayed several days instead of squeezing Ninh Binh into a day trip from Hanoi.
Stay Somewhere That Becomes Part of the Trip
We stayed at Tam Coc Garden, and it ended up being much more than just a place to sleep. The rooms were unique, the food was excellent, the service was wonderful, and the hotel helped arrange several of the experiences we loved most.
The hotel provided bikes for all ages so we could ride toward the Thung Nham area, which made the location feel especially convenient.
We were there around Christmas, and the hotel had beautiful handmade holiday decorations throughout the property. It felt thoughtful and festive without being overdone, and it made the stay feel especially special for us.
How Many Days Should You Spend in Ninh Binh?
We stayed four days, and I’m glad we did. If you only have one day, you can certainly see the highlights — but if you want time for biking, local experiences, hiking, caves, and a slower pace, I’d stay at least 2–3 nights.
For us, Ninh Binh ended up being one of the most memorable parts of Vietnam — exactly the kind of place that stays with you long after the trip is over.
Where We Stayed
Tam Coc Garden was one of the highlights of our time in Ninh Binh. The rooms were unique, the gardens and grounds were beautiful, food and service were excellent, and the location made it easy to explore by bike.
